The following information will address some disturbing information that has been shared with our funeral directors with regards to pre arranging and price quotations.

It is important to us to keep our client families informed and educated properly.

Please note, you do not have to pay in order to preplan your funeral arrangements.  Prepayment of your services can be extremely beneficial but it is clearly an “option”, not a requirement.

If you choose to preplan and not prepay your services there is no contract required by law and you do not have, or need to have a contract with the funeral home.

When requesting a price quotation from more than one funeral home it is very important to be sure the exact same items are being compared.  There are numerous variables that affect the final price of a funeral.

Here are some tips when comparing prices between funeral homes:

~  Be sure that the services being compared are the same, ie:  same amount of visitation time, where the service is being held, private family time prior to any public visitation or service, what additional services or items are being provided, is a stationery package included or additional, same merchandise or fair equivalent items, transportation from the place of death or to the final destination and what the mileage area is included in those costs as well as what the charge is for additional kilometres after the included distance is exceeded.

~  Cash disbursements can add a substantial amount to a funeral account.  When price comparing, be sure those cash disbursements are listed clearly and given a dollar value, not just “included” on the quotation.

~  It is important to know that cash advances must be charged at an EXACT amount on a funeral contract.  For example, if a funeral notice in a newspaper costs $135.00 to place in the paper, that is all the funeral home can charge on the final invoice as a cash advance to the family....not a penny more.

If you have any questions about a price quotation you have received or would like clarification on one of our price quotations, please feel free to contact one of our funeral directors.

Addressing the inaccurate details in a recent “Ask the Director” column in the Lindsay Post.

~ The article indicated it was against the law for a funeral home to guarantee a prepaid funeral unless the prepaid funeral was paid in full… there in no “law” that says a funeral home cannot guarantee a prepaid funeral until it is paid in full.   There are some clear “laws” as to what should happen, here are some of them:

~ a prepaid funeral can only be entered into with an Ontario Licenced Funeral Home or Transfer Service

~ the funeral home or transfer service must supply a complete and detailed contract clearly indicating what services, merchandise and cash advances are covered (there should not be multiple items listed as “included”)

~ the contract must indicate clearly whether it is “guaranteed” or “non-guaranteed” and have clear descriptions outlining the terms and conditions of the contract

~ the funds paid for the services must be held in and with a proper recognized third party company and must not be considered an asset of the funeral home

~ Mackey Funeral Home does have a prepaid plan that does guarantee and pay for your prepaid funeral services if you died after making just one payment.  It is guaranteed in writing.

This plan is only available through the Mackey Funeral Home in the Lindsay and surrounding area.  If you would like more details about this plan, or if you have any questions please feel free to contact our prearrangement director, Bill Shields at 705.328.2721 or at info@mackeys.ca
