Obituary for Lena Mary Murtha (Farrelly)

Murtha, Lena (née Farrelly) – Passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Thursday, December 13th at St. Joseph’s at Fleming in Peterborough. Lena who died in her 94th year was born on June 20, 1925 in Kingscourt, County Cavan, Ireland. After completion of her nursing and midwifery certification in England, Lena set off to see the world with her best friend, Teresa O’Keefe. Their first stop was Lindsay, Ontario where they met the loves of their lives and ended up living a block from each other for the rest of their lives. Lena was the beloved wife of the late Fergus Murtha and loving mother of Kathy, Philip, Patricia, John and Colleen. Cherished mother-in-law to Diane Murtha, Ed Harrison, Mike Fraser and Maria Murtha. Proud ‘Grandma’ of Naythan, Christopher, Collin, Joanna, and Angela. She is predeceased by her siblings – Teresa Farrelly, Patrick Farrelly, Nan Reilly, Hughie Farrelly, John Farrelly, Kathleen Farrelly and Elizabeth Tinnelly. Lena is survived by her sister Sr. Aidan Farrelly who lives in England. She will be sadly missed by her many nieces and nephews. Lena had a full and meaningful life. She loved nursing - which allowed her to express her kind and compassionate spirit. She was blessed to greet many a new baby into this world and to sit at the bed side of many people as they passed into eternity. In her later years, she volunteered as a palliative care nurse. A special thank you for the wonderful caring staff at St. Joseph’s at Fleming. Visitation will take place at the Mackey Funeral Home, 33 Peel Street, Lindsay on Tuesday, December 18th from 7:00 – 9:00p.m. and a Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, 40 Russel Street East on Wednesday, December 19th at 11:00a.m. Interment to follow at St Mary’s Catholic Church.
